2. Write
the Consumer Product Safety Commission and ask them
to ban toxic toys.
According to independent tests, many soft plastic PVC vinyl
toys intended for young children contain up to 40 percent
toxic phthalate
chemicals by weight. While some manufacturers, under pressure
from public health groups, have removed phthalates
from the production of some mouthing toys (teethers and
rattles), much more needs to be done.

3. Tell
us about a toy you think may be unsafe.
PIRG toy safety reports over the last 14 years have directly
led to at least 68 corrective actions by the CPSC
and manufacturers. With your help, we can continue this
tradition of making toys safer.
